Willow Emerald Damselfly at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! A visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 1st August 2026 gave me the opportunity to spend some time looking for and photographing one of the smaller inhabitants of the reserve, a Willow Emerald Damselfly. These delicate insects can be easy to overlook as they move quietly through the vegetation, but taking the time to stop and watch can reveal some excellent photographic opportunities.

Once I had spotted the Willow Emerald Damselfly, I spent some time trying to get close enough to capture the fine details of its body and wings. Their delicate structure and subtle colouring can be easy to miss when viewing them from a distance, but close-up photography really brings out the intricate details and beautiful colours.

Photographing smaller wildlife is always an enjoyable challenge. Getting close enough without disturbing the subject takes patience, and with a small movement potentially sending the damselfly elsewhere, there is always an element of timing involved. When everything comes together, though, it is very rewarding to see those details captured in an image.

Another enjoyable session at Warnham Local Nature Reserve, discovering and photographing some of the smaller wildlife that can so easily be missed when walking around the reserve. It is a good reminder that there is always something worth looking for, even when it is hiding amongst the vegetation.
