Painted Lady in Flight at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is one of my favourite places for wildlife photography, and on 22nd August 2026 I spent some time photographing one of the reserve’s beautiful Painted Lady butterflies.

Photographing a Painted Lady in flight is always a challenge. Once they take to the air, they rarely seem to stay in one place for long, making it a real test of timing, tracking and keeping the autofocus on the butterfly as it moves through the frame. There is very little time to react, and every opportunity can be over almost as quickly as it begins.

I was really pleased to capture this particular Painted Lady in flight, with the butterfly clearly showing against the natural surroundings of Warnham Local Nature Reserve. Capturing wildlife in motion like this is always rewarding, especially when all the elements come together to produce an image that conveys the movement and character of the subject.

Another enjoyable session at one of my favourite wildlife photography locations, and another reminder that you never quite know what photographic opportunities a visit to Warnham will bring.
