Swifts in Flight at Ifield Mill Pond

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Ifield Mill Pond is always a rewarding place to spend time observing local wildlife, and on 17th July 2026 I visited with the hope of photographing one of our most impressive summer visitors — the Swift. These incredible birds are a true symbol of summer, filling the skies with their speed, agility, and unmistakable flight.

Swifts are among the most aerial birds in the world, spending the majority of their lives on the wing. They are perfectly adapted for life in the air, feeding, drinking, and even resting while flying. Watching them sweep effortlessly across the sky above Ifield Mill Pond was a fantastic reminder of just how remarkable these birds are.

Photographing Swifts is always a challenge. Their incredible speed, rapid changes of direction, and unpredictable flight patterns make it difficult to capture them sharply, but that challenge is exactly what makes the successful images so rewarding. Patience, timing, and plenty of tracking through the viewfinder are all part of the process.

Spending time watching these summer visitors at Ifield Mill Pond was a real pleasure, and capturing a few photographs of them in flight made the visit even more memorable. Moments like this are what make wildlife photography so enjoyable — taking the time to appreciate the behaviour and beauty of the species we share our surroundings with.
